WAFC excited by stadium progress

THE West Australian Football Commission welcomes today’s announcement by the State Government outlining the progress of plans for a new major stadium at Burswood.

WAFC Chief Executive Wayne Bradshaw said it was exciting to see the project advancing to the next phase following the State Government’s commitment earlier this year to the construction of a new major stadium for Perth.

“This is another positive step towards meeting the needs of the hundreds of thousands of participants, club members and fans involved with football in WA,” Mr Bradshaw said.

“The WAFC in association with the AFL and our local teams, the West Coast Eagles and Fremantle Football Club, are fully engaged with the State Government in planning for the new stadium and we are confident that a world class stadium will be the fitting result.

“The investment at this time in sound research and planning will ensure the best long term outcome and a stadium that will be flexible, incorporate the latest technology and deliver the greatest fan experience.

“The appointment of internationally renowned architect firm Populous to lead the first phase of the architectural assessment also reflects the commitment by the Government to deliver for the WA public a stadium that incorporates the best the world has to offer.

“We have seen first-hand their work on stadiums in the US and UK and their knowledge will be invaluable in incorporating the best features to make a stadium that WA can be truly proud of.

“The WAFC will continue to urge that the venue is highly accessible by various forms of transport, is capable of catering to all levels of fans, is future proofed by having a large precinct, and is made available to maximize the on field success of our Clubs.

“It must also be designed to ensure it operates efficiently and continues to generate the revenue needed to support grass roots football throughout the State,” Mr Bradshaw said.
