Rogers Cup Winners

Claremont Piranhas won the Rogers 20/20 Cup Grand Final in a tight game against Peel Thunderbirds.  Skills were high from both teams early on, with Thunderbirds leading three goals straight to Claremont’s 1 goal straight at half time. Claremont steadied in the second half, with Best On Ground Jaime Hearle kicking two majors to secure the cup.

Captain Bec Clancy accepted the Cup on behalf of her team from Charmaine Rogers. The Competition was named after the life member for her outstanding service to female football.

WAWFL New Competition Structure

The WA Women’s Football League Board is proud to announce the new league structure for the 2011 season. The new competition allows for game growth with the inception of 2 new clubs and strong clubs to play in an elite competition.

In the newly formed “Premier League” last year’s Division 1 winners Coastal Titans head up the talented league, along with runners up Swan Districts, East Fremantle and Claremont Piranhas. This combination of clubs promises great displays of elite football with players and coaches alike needing to be at their best each week. This should provide state players good preparation for their National Championships later this year.

Joondalup WFC Quiz Night

The Joondalup Women's Football Club would like to invite you to their pre-season Quiz Night on February the 2nd at Gumblossum Hall in Quinns Rocks starting at 7pm.

Tickets are $10 per person and need to be pre purchased from the Joondalup Women's Football Club committee. The tables are for eight people with drinks at the bar and BYO nibblies.

Peel Thunderbirds Season Launch and Coach Applications

The Peel Thunderbirds Football club entered the WA Women’s Football League in 2010 and werepremiers in its inaugural season and is now looking to expand into both Division 1 & 2.

WAWFL AGM on 3rd November 2010

The West Australian Women's Football League Annual General Meeting will take place on Wednesday 3rd November 2010.

The meeting, to be held at Patersons Stadium in the Doig Room room, will get underway at 6.30pm.

Anyone wishing to be considered for a Board position has until 4pm on Friday 29 October 2010 to submit a nomination to the Community Football Office. For a nomination form, please visit the downloads section of www.wawfl.com.au

Sandgropers Begin Journey to South Australia

The Women’s AFL National Championship returns in 2011 and will be hosted by South Australia. Western Australia hosted the last tournament in 2009 where the home side were defeated in the Grand Final on Subiaco Oval by traditional rivals, Victoria.

The initial WA squad for the 2011 tournament was recently named at the WAWFL Presentation night. A group of 35 players compiled by a selection panel over the 2010 WAWFL season were announced in front of their peers. The players will come together in the next few months to train, get to know each other and hopefully earn a place in the final state squad.

Joondalup Falcons Finish Season in Style

2010 was always going to be a challenging year for Joondalup, firstly being its first year in Division 1, with a new coach and adding new players to form a second team.

After the 14 matches it was evident to all those that watched the team it had developed and how the fast flowing, quick running from the backline will put Joondalup in good stead for 2011.

Caulfield Voted Best & Fairest

Melissa Caulfield became the seventeenth recipient of the Dhara Kerr Fairest and Best Trophy in the WAWFL’s 23rd season at the recent WAWFL Presentation Night.

Caulfield, (pictured) plays for Southern River football club won the award outright after last year’s tie between Coastal Titans’ Deanne Coates and Southern River’s Kiara Bowers.

Titans and Thunderbirds Claim Victory in Historic Grand Finals

The WAWFL season came to a dramatic conclusion on the weekend with the Coastal Titans stealing a one point victory from a gallant Swan Districts in the dying stages of a brutal encounter.  In a see-sawing affair at EFTel it was Titans veteran Amy Cotterell who calmly slotted a goal with only seconds remaining to give the Coastal Titans their fifth premiership in seven seasons.

Swan Districts went into the match warm favourites after going through the home and away season undefeated but the Titans, who beat Swans in the second semi final two weeks ago, called on all their finals experience to snatch victory with seconds to spare.

WAWFL Grand Finals Preview

The 2010 WAWFL Grand Finals take place this Sunday, 5 September, at EFTel Oval, Perth.

Coastal Titans will take on Swan Districts in the Division 1 Grand Final at 2.30pm. Swan Districts finished the year at the top of the ladder with an unbeaten record in the regular season. It was not until they faced the Titans in the Semi-Final of this year's finals series that they suffered their first defeat with the Titans edging a very close game. Swans hit back in the Preliminary Final ousting last year's Premiers, East Fremantle.
